Student Authorization Procedures
A student wishing to attend an institution for the purposes
of education as outlined in REGULATION 17 (1)(b), (c), (d)
or (e) must present an original letter of acceptance bearing
the school, school board, district, division or university's
letterhead.
R17(1) A student authorization may not be obtained
by any person for the purpose of taking any academic, professional
or vocational training course unless that course
(b) is given at any institution described in paragraph
10(a) of the ACT (any university or college authorized by
statute or charter to confer degrees) or any other publicly
funded institution;
(c) is recommended by a minister of the Government
of Canada, other than the minister of Employment and Immigration,
or by a minister of the government of any province or by any
agency of the Government of Canada or the government of any
province;
(d) is incidental and secondary to the main purpose
of that person's presence in Canada; or
(e) involves upgrading of skills or language training
and is given at an institution that operates under a provincial
or federal license.The letter must specify the type of studies
to be undertaken and confirm acceptance. Depending on the
type of institution enrolled in, and the REGULATION under
which the individual is classified, the courses may be part
time and may be of less than six months duration. The following
factors will be taken into consideration in such cases:
- laboratory time;
- library time;
- outside work or other assignments which can be considered
an integral part of a course of study;
- study hall time
Note: In order to be eligible for a student authorizations,
the applicant must first be accepted by an institution.
Some institutions may not be acceptable for the purpose of
issuance of a student authorization.
